The countrywide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic led to a major disruption in the entire world. It cracked down hardest on those with a hand-to-mouth existence, the daily wage earners and the migrant labourers from remote rural and tribal areas.
Their children who already suffer from acute malnutrition, were left with little option due to no access to resources. It is this section of society that was the worst affected.
Several aged people whose children and grandchildren have migrated in other districts and states were at a complete loss of resources, particularly the elderly who are living all by themselves in this time of crisis. The migrants who got stuck in other districts were grappling for provision of both food and shelter.

CEI started its Covid Relief Initiative with the below objectives:
- To reach out to the most marginalised and poor sections of rural and tribal society in the time of Nationwide lockdown and provide them with essential food and medical supplies
- To provide food and medical support to migrant labourers who have been stuck in different places in this lockdown
- To provide long term solutions in sustainable livelihoods through Resiliency and Development Economics Solutions
CEI identified the communities who were the most affected. These included rural people, elderly and destitute, tribals & particularly vulnerable tribals groups, nomadic and de-notified tribes, migrants and those living below the poverty line.
The local government bodies – Collector Office, Tehsildars, Gram Panchayats also reached out to CEI to help them reach out to maximum people as well. CEI provided dry ration and essential medical & sanitation supplies to the beneficiaries identified, including rice, flour, oil, dal, salt, spices, vegetables, bathing & washing soaps, sanitary napkins, hand sanitisers, masks etc. which would suffice a family for one month.
In several places, CEI also ran community kitchens to provide cooked nutritious meals to those who were in need. CEI identified the communities who were the most affected.
