The tribal forest communities of India have access to a rich array of forest resources. However, they are also the poorest in terms of access to critical inputs, technology, and food security. This unfortunately has led to a vicious cycle of starvation – malnutrition – low mortality rates amongst tribals. CEI has developed its Organic Farming and Horticulture Initiative through its Kitchen Garden Model wherein every tribal grows plants & vegetables in his / her kitchen garden. This not only ensures higher growth rate in agriculture, but also addresses the nutritional needs of the tribal families. Horticulture makes more efficient use of small land-holdings, scarce water resources and can take full advantage of family labour.
